Dear Parents,
I am sending my newsletter home a day early, since tomorrow is our field day at Powers High School. If you are driving for this event, please come to my classroom at 8:45 AM to get the children you will be taking. We will be returning around 2:00 PM. Next week has several important tests for the children to prepare for.
I am sending home the Unit 34 spelling list today. The children will have their practice test over these words next Wednesday, with those children not getting perfect scores taking their test on Friday, May 25.
We have a busy week ahead of us in reading. We will finish our last unit of stories in our reading book next week. On Tuesday, May 22, I will test the children over the words from “Wizard of Oz-adventures”. The children will be taking the Unit 4 vocabulary test on Wednesday, May 23. Please have them study all the words on the Unit 4 list until they know and understand them. The children will also be taking a booklet test that day over the phonetic and comprehension skills we have worked on this month.
In math, the children have taken the Fourth Quarter Math Test and are now working on the End-of-the-Book test. Once I they have finished this test, I will be doing some supplementary math lessons to add to or reinforce concepts that I’ve taught this year.
I am sending home the Social Studies Study Guide with the children today listing the facts the children have been learning in class about our state. Please have them review their Michigan fact sheet until they know the information and are ready for the test, which I will give on May 31.
We have started our last science module that deals with the different features of our planet Earth-- our land, water and air.
Mrs. Murphy helped the children to plant some pumpkin seeds this week. Hopefully we have some “sprouters” to send home before the end of this school year. The children are excited to see if they can grow some pumpkins for Halloween.
The children have the final review unit to complete in religion next week, before we take the last religion test for this year.
Next Tuesday, May 22, the Second Graders will be doing the readings and taking up the gifts for the 8:45 AM Children’s Mass. You are welcome to come.
On Wednesday next week, the children will be making rosaries with the St. Mary Rosary makers. This is always a fun activity for the month of May, and a wonderful way to honor Mary.
The May Share Day today was a fun way for the children to show some of the mementoes they received for their First Communion. Thank you for being so helpful with our monthly Share Days by sending in items for your child to show and tell us about.
Next Friday, May 25, we will be celebrating Meleah Newhouses’s summer birthday. She will be bringing in her birthday treat for our snack that day.
Here’s hoping sunny spring weather is here to stay! God Bless You.
