Dear Parents,
The children have been busy completing some wonderful work to put on display for the Open House next week. I look forward to seeing you Wednesday evening, September 8. The Open House begins at 6:30 PM in the Church, followed by the parents going to their children’s classrooms. I will be going over my classroom procedures as well as handing out important sacramental information to those parents whose children are making their First Reconciliation and First Communion this school year. After our long Labor Day weekend, there will be some important assignments and tests for the children to prepare for. Reading will be a busy class next week, as the children will read their third story. Please have the children study the words from “Nick-excuse” on their vocabulary list until they know and understand them. The children will be tested over these words on Thursday, September 9. I gave a practices test over the Unit 2 spelling words today. I am sending home those practice tests today. If your child got a perfect score, they will not have to take the Unit 2 spelling test scheduled for Tuesday, September 7. The Unit 3 spelling list will be going home on Tuesday, September 7. I will give the practice test on Thursday, September 9, and the regular scheduled test over the Unit 3 spelling words will be Friday, September 10. In math this week, we have been busy reviewing the subtraction facts to 10. Next week we will be working with both addition and subtraction facts to 10. We have been learning about butterflies in science this week and their different body parts. We made colorful caterpillars and butterflies to decorate our hallway bulletin board. The children are taking home a science homework sheet today. They are asked to observe an animal outdoors and watch for behavior that helps it stay alive. They need to complete the information on the worksheet, as well as draw and color a picture of this animal in the space provided on the worksheet. This science assignment is due on Thursday, September 9. The children got to meet my mother, Mrs. Murphy, last week. She is a retired school nurse from the Flushing School District, who is kind enough to volunteer a couple of mornings a week in our classroom as an aide. She will also be helping to teach some Health units to the children later on in the school year. Any child who wishes to order from the September Scholastic Book Club issues needs to turn in the order by Friday, September 10. Just a few reminders for next week: The children must have an art shirt for school. If they have not brought one in yet, please have one sent in by Thursday. Library will be on Tuesdays this year, so the children need to make sure to return their books by the following Tuesday. Any child, who did not bring gym shoes in for last week’s class, must have gym shoes by next Friday. I hope you enjoy a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend. God Bless You.
