STEPPING AHEAD with Mileage Club The Feelin’ Good Mileage Club® is North America’s premier walking/running program for schools. Last year, more than 2.5 million children in nearly 20,000 schools logged almost 30 million miles (48 million kilometres). This amount of activity helped reduce playground hassles, increase kids’ learning readiness and fight obesity. The Mileage Club lunch-hour program is simple. Students walk on the playground once a week. Mileage Markers (yellow cards) are checked every time a child completes a lap. When recess ends, students return their cards to the Mileage Club Coordinator. For each five miles (or eight kilometers) walked, the child is rewarded with a Toe Token (brightly colored plastic foot) to put on a shoelace or chain.
Children Sharpen Their Skills
By participating in the Feelin' Good Mileage Club, your students will discover that physical activity can be fun and rewarding. The children will also enhance their scholastic skills!
Feelin' Good Mileage Club schools find that:
First graders learn fractions (by counting laps).
Students learn geography by plotting miles on a map and/or "walking" to a
new destination.
Participants learn about the environment and how to take care of it.
Children learn how to set goals, work to achieve them and then evaluate their personal achievement.
Walking helps develop fitness while building muscles, burning calories, reducing stress and creating good lifelong habits. Educators who use the program say their students end the school year in better physical condition than before they began the Mileage Club.
